Cмех (день улыбки) – Humour changes the attitude

I think it will be reasonable to start this essay with the following question: “Do you know what the World Smile Day is?” This little holiday is well known all over the world thanks to Harvey Ball from Worcester, Massachusetts because he created the smiley face in 1963. And that image became the most recognizable symbol of a good will and a good cheer. Harvey Ball thought that we should devote one day every year to smiles and kind acts.

The first Friday in October every year is considered to be the World Smile Day. The first World Smile Day was held in 1999.

Well, according to the dictionary “humour” is the quality of being funny or the abilityto appreciate or express that which is humorous.

Nowadays it is viewed as a treatment, if you get bored with something or you are in a bad mood, just raise a smile or laugh at this or that joke with your friends. It will change your attitude to the situation certainly it can be applied not in all cases.

Humour depends very much on the ethnic background knowledge. There are some examples of jokes in English which are different from that of in Russian, and i have found some examples: “- My dog has no nose. – Then how does he smell? – Terrible!” or one more joke: “Patient: Nobody listens to anything I say.

Doctor: Next!” Humour can influence on your life greatly, humorous people are perceived as more likeable in the society.

English humour differs from Russian. Usually the English joke is difficult to understand for people who are not familiar with the peculiarities of the language and the play of words. English people treat themselves and others cum grano salis (“with a sense of irony”), they like to laugh at the weather, at family values, politics etc. There is nothing forbidden for them in this sphere. Russian humour is usually sharp, harsh, abrupt, and brusque.

The following joke will make Englishman just smile: “The woman leads a cow. One man saw that and decided to offer a lift. He asked: – Where are we leading this old cow?

The woman answers: – Oh, she is not old, she is only 2 year old. The man turned to woman: – I talked not to you!” There are a lot of examples of jokes in Russian and there is even a special genre “political joke”. Russian people may also laugh at themselves: “Strictness of laws in Russia is evaluated by its optional execution”.

So, laugh and humour may be useful in some situations but do remember that the jokes should be well-spoken.
