LONDON

London, the capital of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, is one of the world’s biggest capital cities. It is the residence of British sovereign. It is also a great industrial and cultural centre with the population of more than eight million people.

It is known that London consists of four main districts which differ from each other. These are the City, Westminster, the West End and the East End.

The heart of London is the City – its commercial and business centre. Here you can see the Tower of London that comes first among the historic buildings of the city. Many banks and offices are situated here.

Not far away, in Westminster, where most of the Government buildings are situated is Westminster Abbey. Opposite Westminster Abbey are the Houses of Parliament. It is a beautiful building with two towers and a very big clock called Big Ben.

The clock was named after Sir Benjamin Hall under whose direction it was made. You can climb the stairs to the top of the Tower and see all of London lying below from there. So this is Westminster, the most important part of the capital, its administrative centre.

To the west of Westminster is the West End. Here we find most of the big shops, hotels, museums, art galleries, theatres and concert halls. Piccadilly Circus is the heart of London’s West End.

In the West End there are wide streets with beautiful houses and many parks, gardens and squires.

To the east of Westminster is the East End, an industrial district of the capital. You can’t see many fine houses there. Most of the plants and factories are situated there.

So London is a city of great contrasts.

Walking around London one can also see and admire Westminster Palace, Trafalgar Square, Whitehall, the British Museum and many other places of interest in the city.

London is situated on the river Thames. London is a great industrial and cultural centre. The City is the business centre of London.

Westminster is the administrative centre of London. Opposite the Houses of Parliament is Westminster Abbey. The tombs of many great statesmen, scientists and writers are in the Abbey. In the West End there are wide streets with beautiful houses and many parks, gardens and squares.

To the east of Westminster stretches the East End. London is the city of contrasts. Look over there: the builders are building a new house. Roman has already built the house. The builders haven’t built this house yet.

When I entered the room, Peter was building a house of bricks. He will build a house of bricks. Nick and Dmitry are going to build a new house here. Haven’t you built the house yet? He has already built the house, hasn’t he?

Who will build this house? – Our family will.
