Україна – держава в південно-східній Європі (географічний центр Європи знаходиться біля міста Рахів у Закарпатській області) – проголосила свою незалежність 24 серпня 1991 року й підтвердила свій статус 1 грудня того ж року. Територія України становить 603 700 квадратних кілометрів. Найбільша відстань між північною та південною точками – 893 кілометри, між східною та західною точками – 1316 кілометрів. Загальна довжина кордонів 6500 кілометрів.
Населення України нараховує більше 52 мільйонів чоловік.

Жителі України належать до більше ніж 110 етнічних груп. Найчисельнішими з них є українці (біля 38 млн) і росіяни (більше 11 млн). Більше 15 млн етнічних українців живуть в інших країнах (східна й західна діаспора). Україна межує з Польщею, Словакією та Угорщиною на заході, Румунією та Молдовою – на південному заході. її північним сусідом є Білорусія, а східним – Росія.

Сьогодні в Україні знайдені поклади марганцевої руди, нафти, газу, нікелю, графіту, мармуру, бокситу, рідкісних металів та іншої цінної сировини.
В Україні виробляють сучасні надзвукові авіалайнери, зернозбиральні машини, потужні локомотиви й комп’ютери, телевізори, автоматизовані лінії зв’язку, роботи й т. д. Українські вчені роблять цінний внесок у розвиток світової науки. Україна зі своїми унікальними природними умовами й значним професійним та інтелектуальним потенціалом має всі можливості для швидкого розвитку. Зараз Україна шукає своє місце серед вільних країн світу.
Вона є однією з членів-засновників ООН (Організації Об’єднаних Націй) і визнана майже всіма державами світу.
Ukraine is situated in Southeastern Europe. The territory of Ukraine extends 893 kilometres from north to south and 1,316 kilometres from east to west. In the north Ukraine borders on Byelorussia, in the east and north-east, on Russia; in the south-west, on Hungary, Romania, Moldova; in the west, on Poland and Slovakia. In the south Ukraine is washed by the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.
The total length of boundaries is 6,500 kilometres. In the north of Ukraine there are forests, in the west – the Carpathian mountains, in the eastern and central Ukraine – black-soil steppelands. The main territory of Ukraine is flat, but 5% (per cent) of it make up mountains. The major rivers are the Dnipro, the Dniester, the Bug, the Donets and others. Ukraine is rich in many mineral resources.
Huge reserves of coal and iron have formed the base for the metallurgical industry. Today commercially valuable deposits of manganese ore, oil, gas, nickel, graphite, marble, bauxites, rare metals and other valuable raw materials have been found in Ukraine. The geographical position of Ukraine is very favourable for the development of its industry and agriculture.

Ukraine is now looking for its place among free countries of the world. It is one of the founding members of UNO (the United Nations Organization) and is recognized by almost all the states of the world.
